Negroamaro is believed to be a Greek import but official documentation of its presence only dates to 1872. Viticulturally Negroamaro is characterized by abundant and dependable production, by being very adaptable to most soils and good disease and drought resistance. Its skins are especially rich in polyphenols such as resveratrol ( a much studied antioxidant), phenolic acids and anthocyanins.
